Building a Lean Culture to Overcome 21st Century Realities

We are living and operating in a VUCA world where Volatility is frequent, Uncertainty is the norm, Complexity is part of everyday life and Ambiguity is rampant. The need for constant change, agility, flexibility and improvement is essential now more than ever. But how to face and overcome these 21st Century realities? What leadership style should we adopt? Lean Leadership is the solution.

A Lean Culture is the basis for a modern management concept that engages all parts of an organisation in continuous improvement, innovation and learning in order to increase customer value and overall organisational effectiveness. Lean Leadership is the leadership behaviours, habits and drivers that are required to create, sustain and grow the Lean Culture that is essential for an organisation to thrive in a VUCA World. This course provides existing and upcoming Leaders with a framework to understand and self-develop their own Lean Leadership skills, providing them the basis to drive a high-performance, continuously thriving enterprise.
    Objective
This course is designed for leaders of all levels to learn the essentials of Lean Leadership in order to thrive in a VUCA world. By the end of the course, participants will have a general understanding of what is Lean Leadership, why it is important in today’s culture of constant change and how to apply to themselves and their organisations. Participants will be taken through all the key elements of Lean Leadership, using exercises and examples to reinforce critical concepts and thinking patterns. Real leaders from industry will be used as reference to highlight key leadership drivers essential to a high-performance enterprise. Small teams will work through exercises and discover how to apply Lean Leadership to significantly improve the organisation’s ability to Change, Improve and Innovate.
    Outline
    • Background: Modern Challenges in a VUCA World
A brief overview of VUCA will be provided, as well as an explanation of how VUCA is providing both challenges and opportunities to the modern organisation.

    • Introduction to Lean Thinking
Participants will be provided a brief introduction of Lean Thinking: the history, basic concepts and its fascinating journey through multiple sectors and applications. We will discuss how Lean Thinking can help an organisation thrive in a VUCA world.

    • Leadership Reflection
A personal reflection (A key Lean Leadership habit known as Hansei) will be performed by each participant, to highlight positives and challenges in their own perceived Leadership mind set and behaviours. Findings will be discussed among participants to allow for group sharing on lessons learned and best practices.

    • Strategic Planning for a VUCA World
To thrive in a VUCA world, agility and flexibility are paramount. Gone are the days of having a rigid 3- to 5-Year Plan and accompanying management processes that remains largely unchanged quarter after quarter, month after month. Lean Leadership uses a concept known as Hoshin Kanri, the Lean Way to developing and deploying strategic plans that are completely aligned both horizontally and vertically, using the Circular Planning model. Hoshin Kanri is also flexible and quickly adaptable to rapidly changing conditions, using the PDCA thinking process.

    • Lean Management Systems
Leadership behaviours are not enough to be successful in a VUCA world - well-designed and smart Management Systems must be part of the Lean Leadership suite of competencies. In Lean Thinking, managements systems are designed to be visual, easy to understand, used by all levels of the organisation, and sustainable through daily, weekly and monthly management reviews. This section will provide a brief overview of key Lean Management Systems, including Daily Management, Daily Accountability and Leader Standard Work.

    • Lean Leadership Behaviours
Participants will be introduced to the Key Traits of Lean Leadership, essential to drive and support the Lean Management Systems. Each Trait has several Enablers that are essential to achieving that specific trait, and these will also be covered. Examples and quotes from real leaders will be provided for context. Exercises, videos and case studies will be used to reinforce the true intent and relevance of the various traits. Leadership role-playing shall be utilised to bring the concepts to life.

    • Conclusion
A Self-Assessment will be provided so that participants can self-rate their current Lean Leadership capabilities with the recommended characteristics. Results will be shared in an intimate, small team format for an honest and deep discussion on leadership behaviours to reinforce versus ones that need strengthening. A Personal Learning Plan tool will be provided to each participant for their own individual learning and development plan. Methods for continuous follow-up and learning will be recommended, including further coursework, reading, and other developmental ways. As a final segment, Key Points for the Lean Leadership Journey will be presented for final thoughts.
