Mentoring is a process in which a more skilled or more experienced person, who serves as a role model to teach, sponsor, encourage, counsel and befriend a less skilled or less experienced person for the purpose of promoting his or her professional and or personal development. A mentor can be equated to a diamond jeweler who delicately cuts the rough diamond to release its brilliance.

Confucius said: "Tell me, and I will forget, show me and I may remember, involve me and I will understand." As a leader in whatever career that you are in, your most important and unique role is to be a mentor to a mentee. As a mentor you assume a unique role of providing support by offering information, advice and assistance in a way that empowers the mentee. The mentee will look up to the mentor for guidance and direction on what needs to be done and how it should be done. This is where you the mentor need to be the guiding force in bringing the best out of your mentee. Mentoring has now become a critical management tool that leaders can use to connect with the workforce, troubleshoot and build productive teams. Further the financial consideration is that leaders who make good mentors will be able to reap the fruits of their labour by being able to make more money, get promoted more quickly and enjoy greater career success. So the question you need to ask yourself is whether you can afford to be out of that loop when your workforce needs guidance?
